Medical school can come with an unexpected side effect: health anxiety. During anatomy training, the author became convinced that normal bodily variations were signs of serious illness, fearing cancer or HIV. This experience, known as “Medical Students’ Disease,” is surprisingly common and usually temporary. Looking back, the author sees it as a valuable lesson in understanding both health anxiety and the fears patients experience. .
